Abstract:
Transfusion of plasma products in the US continues to grow and exceeds the use in the EU. Lack of sufficient education for healthcare providers contributes to this overuse and misuse of this component. This presentation strives to outline the types of plasma products available, their contents, dosing, laboratory management and adverse reactions associated with plasma transfusion.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this lecture, the participant will be able to:
1. Identify the types of plasma, how obtained and content
2. Gain knowledge as to the appropriate dose, volume and timing of plasma transfusion
3. Examine current EB-guidelines/indications for plasma trasnfusion
4. Discuss adverse reactions associated with plasma transfusion
Goal:
The goal of this presentation is to update the healthcare provider on current plasma transfusion practice.
Teaching Strategy:
The teaching strategy will be didactic in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, followed by a question and answer period.
